Aid Agencies Scramble to Evacuate Animals Amid Humanitarian Crisis
Amid the chaos and violence engulfing Afghanistan, aid agencies are working tirelessly to evacuate animals, including thousands of Afghan Hounds, who face a grim fate under Taliban rule.
The worsening security situation across Afghanistan in the wake of foreign troop withdrawal and Taliban advances has forced an estimated 3.5 million people to flee their homes. Among those most vulnerable are animals, particularly the country's iconic Afghan Hounds, who are revered for their beauty and loyalty but are now at risk of persecution or neglect.
"The situation is dire," said a spokesperson for an international aid agency operating in Afghanistan. "We're receiving reports of animals being abandoned, mistreated, or even killed by the Taliban. It's heartbreaking to witness."
The Taliban's stance on animals is unclear. In the past, the extremist group has been accused of cruelty towards animals, including dogs. However, there have also been reports of Taliban members showing compassion to animals in need.
Aid agencies are working around the clock to evacuate as many animals as possible before the situation worsens. Several organizations, including the International Animal Rescue and the Nowzad charity, have already successfully flown out hundreds of dogs.
"We're doing everything we can to save these animals," said Nowzad founder Pen Farthing. "They've been our loyal companions for centuries, and we won't abandon them now."
The evacuation of animals from Afghanistan is a complex and dangerous operation. Many animals are injured or traumatized, and the logistics of transporting them to safety are challenging. Aid agencies are appealing for donations and support to help them continue their lifesaving work.
