North Korea: A History of Political Divisions
Early Governmental Entities
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. Before the establishment of the DPRK, the People's Republic of Korea (PRK) briefly served as a provisional government following surrender.
Establishment of the DPRK
In 1948, North Korea was formally established as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) under the leadership of President Kim Il Sung. The DPRK has maintained its existence since then, despite geopolitical shifts and internal political developments.
